Bayer Is Building A $2.2 Billion Drug Manufacturing Campus In New Albany

Posted

Bayer will build a $2.2 billion pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in the New Albany International Business Park, the company announced on October 2nd. Around 600 people will work there once it’s running, Bayer says, along with roughly 1,500 construction jobs for the buildout.

Bayer describes the campus as flexible and modular, built to make both drug substances, meaning the active ingredients, and finished drug products. The campus will support Bayer’s cancer, heart and kidney drug lines, the company said. The first module, for drug substance manufacturing, is expected to be operating in 2031. A second module for drug product manufacturing is planned to follow in 2034.

Bayer said it has spent more than $7 billion on U.S. pharmaceutical research and manufacturing over the past five years.

What’s known about the site

The campus will be built in the New Albany International Business Park and will span about 200 acres.

The park already has a life sciences roster that includes Amgen, Hims & Hers, American Regent and Pharmavite. The New Albany Company said the life sciences companies it has drawn to the park already employ more than 2,660 people there. Amgen’s 350-job expansion is due to open in 2027. New Albany is also home to Intel’s chip campus, first reported in January 2022 and later named Ohio One.

Incentives

Incentive terms weren’t part of the announcement. ABC6 reported the project is expected to pursue a Job Creation Tax Credit through the Ohio Department of Development and seek assistance from JobsOhio, with details to come after the agreements are finalized.

Synergy with nearby education facility

Bayer plans to draw on the Ohio Life Science Training Center, which is under construction in the business park and scheduled to open in summer 2027, to train biomanufacturing operators and technicians. JobsOhio is putting up to $30 million into the center, with nearly $8 million more from the City of New Albany, the State of Ohio and The New Albany Company. JobsOhio CEO J.P. Nauseef said Columbus State, Ohio Life Sciences and the city are “building the talent pipeline” with JobsOhio. New Albany Mayor Sloan Spalding called it a nearly $38 million facility and the first of its kind in Ohio.

What Bayer’s CEO said

Bayer CEO Bill Anderson, who ABC6 noted was born in Cleveland, said the new site “will be home to manufacturing expertise and a skilled workforce that will strengthen our ability to deliver innovative, high-quality medicines to patients both in the United States and abroad.”
